Les forces anglo-américaines débarquent au Maroc et en Algérie, territoires demeurés sous l'autorité du pouvoir de Vichy.
Grâce à l'action de la Résistance qui est parvenue à neutraliser les autorités vichystes, l'opération est un succès à Alger. Un armistice est rapidement conclu avec l'amiral Darlan, chef de l'ensemble des forces armées, et le général Juin, commandant en chef en Afrique du nord.
A Oran (Algérie) et à Rabat (Maroc), le colonel Tostain et le général Béthouart échouent à rallier pacifiquement les généraux Boisseau et Noguès. Ceux-ci donnent l'ordre aux troupes françaises de tirer sur les Anglo-américains. Trois jours de combat s'ensuivront : 1.827 morts et 2.717 blessés.
Les Alliés anglo-saxons n'en auront pas moins atteint leur objectif : contrôler l'Afrique du Nord et enclencher le ralliement de l'armée française d'Afrique par le truchement de l'amiral Darlan.
