Les verbes à préposition

sont des verbes transitifs indirects.

 

Transitifs : ils ont un objet > Do you want to talk about it?

 

Indirects : la relation verbe-objet passe par une préposition :

cope with, talk about, listen to, deal with.

 

Dans un énoncé S - V transitif indirect - O,

la préposition sépare le verbe de son objet : SVPO.

 

 

 

Comme le montrent les énoncés 1-2,

il n'y a pas toujours d'équivalence syntaxique entre le français et l'anglais :

remind of -> rappeler, enter -> entrer dans / en.

 

Autres exemples :

look at -> regarder

listen to -> écouter

approve of -> approuver

pray to -> prier

owe someone -> devoir à quelqu'un

 

 

Le verbe peut parfois être séparé de sa préposition par un complément (3-4).

 

 

 

Dans certains cas, l'objet peut être antéposé à la proposition.

 

 

 

La préposition peut modifier le sens du verbe premier :

turn (tourner) -> turn into (transformer, adapter) -> 5.

stand (se tenir) -> stand by ("défendre" / "soutenir" -> 6.
