for extending membership to states with chequered human rights records

while refusing to consider his country's application.

where he is expected to win the support of President Bush for Ankara's case,

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he did not understand why

4 -    Ministers and mandarins last night prepared for a showdown with trade union leaders

after civil servants across five government departments voted to strike

in the biggest Whitehall walkout for 13 years.

Tens of thousands of employees in jobcentres, courts, immigration and other services

"The finger of blame should be pointed firmly at the government and these departments.

We are sorry for any inconvenience the action will cause but there comes a point

5 -    Robot's odyssey across space reaches Saturn

Cassini, the most expensive robot space probe ever built,

will this week make its final crucial approach to Saturn

after a seven-year, two-billion-mile journey across the solar system.

On Thursday, the $3 billion spacecraft will slip between two of the planet's rings

and ignite its main motors for a critical 96-minute burn.

If successful, the rocket blast will send the 5.5 tonne probe spiralling into orbit round Saturn,

where it will begin a four-year investigation of the mysterious planet and its family of moons.

6 -    So you want to buy a car?

You flick through the car ads in your local paper, wander around a couple of car showrooms;

perhaps you even buy a copy of Parker's motoring guide.

Somehow you end up engaged in a toe-curling haggling session with a salesman in a dodgy suit

who smooth-talks you into a deal that's more than you can really afford.

Surely there must be a better way?

The web can be your most powerful ally when buying a car.

It could save you from the ignominy of shelling out on a second-hand car that turns out to be a lemon,

or a new model that depreciates faster than you can say "power steering".

You can use the web to do everything from figuring out what make and model suits you,

to locating a suitable seller,

and finally ordering and paying for your new car.

Many buyers plump for the first two stages,

but refuse to [ viseur ] commit to [ préposition ]  buying a car

- particularly one with a few miles already on the clock - sight unseen.

But where to start?

There are a bewildering number of motoring websites to choose from. [ préposition en fin de proposition ]

I'll go through the stages of buying a car one-by-one

and explain how useful the web can be in helping this stage of the car-buying process go smoothly.

The research stage

First you need to make two vital decisions:

how much do you want to spend and what kind of car are you looking for ?  [ préposition en fin de proposition ]

Several sites have buyers' guides that can help you to [ viseur ] compare one model to [ préposition ]

another within your budget:

among the best are AA's car buying guide and Parker's price guide.

Both review new and used models and will also estimate how much your current car is worth.

The other potential car buyer's essential bookmark is What Car?

Online, with comprehensive reviews and ratings for both new and used cars

and its target price search facility will allow you to check

whether your budget will realistically stretch to a Lexus RX.

If it's a new car you're after,  [ préposition en fin de proposition ]

the Car Pages' new car guide is also worth a look.

Buying a car can be a daunting undertaking,
but knowing where to look on the internet can make it a whole lot easier, writes Jane Perrone, G, 13.11.2004, http://www.guardian.co.uk/cars/story/0,15383,1350134,00.html

More than 30 years after the last Apollo mission,

Customers can search for songs, hear 30-second previews and buy individual tracks, or a complete album for £7.99, undercutting not only most record shops but supermarkets and online traders. Songs can then be burned on to CDs, stored on a Mac or PC computer or placed on iPods, Apple's hugely popular personal stereo for the digital age, which can store up to 10,000 tracks. More than three million iPods have been sold and Mr Jobs admitted Apple could not make them fast enough. Hit by a 7.6% fall in retail music sales last year, the record industry said the distribution of music had now entered the digital age.

A young gang of 21st century "Oliver Twists" used cutting edge technology to pick the public's electronic pockets, a court has heard.

Armed with a carefully disguised "skimmer" and special video cameras, they spied on cash machine customers withdrawing their money. Once account details had been "lifted" and transmitted to nearby accomplices equipped with a laptop, the downloaded data was used to clone cards and pocket
thousands of pounds. Unfortunately for them, a passing police patrol spotted them one evening behaving suspiciously at an "after hours" cash machine lobby, London's Southwark Crown Court was told. The six Romanians - four still teenagers and all illegal immigrants - were promptly arrested and their hi-tech tools seized
