En français, un même mot, "depuis", introduit

la durée (depuis vingt ans)

ou

le début d'une période (depuis 1995) :

Je la connais depuis vingt ans.

Je ne l'ai plus vu depuis qu'il a déménagé.

Je suis journaliste depuis 1995.

J'habite Paris depuis Noël.

En anglais, pour dire "depuis", on emploie :

- since pour marquer le début / ancrer le point de départ de la période de référence d'un bilan.

- for pour indiquer la durée quantifiée de la période.

For est donc toujours suivie d'un quantificateur :

ø (durée indéterminée), adjectif numéral cardinal (two, three...), many, etc.

- Le marquage temporel introduit par for ou since délimite un segment chronologique,

segment sur lequel porte un bilan fait par l'énonciateur.

Le Groupe Verbal (GV) de la proposition principale

est au present perfect (have auxiliaire + participe passé),

forme verbale qui permet notamment de faire un bilan.

Concordance des temps : lorsque l'énoncé-bilan s'insère dans un texte au prétérit,

il est au past perfect (had auxiliaire + participe passé).

Anglais américain > on peut rencontrer since + marqueur de temps + prétérit :

Since 1913, the United States witnessed [ prétérit ] only one other year of such unequal wealth distribution — 1928,

the year before the stock market crashed, according to Jared Bernstein, a senior fellow at the Economic Policy

    Le verbe de la proposition en since (depuis) est toujours au prétérit,
