Wormwood Scrubs

photographed by Bettina von Kameke

Photographer Bettina von Kameke spent time
inside Wormwood Scrubs prison, north-west London,
observing inmates' daily rituals.

Milton Rogovin by Fred R. Conrad / The New York Times        April 2009

Milton Rogovin        1909-2011

social documentary photographer who built a life's work
by looking through a lens at people who were invisible to others.

Rogovin's pictures documented the lives of the poor, the dispossessed,
the working class — in particular those living in a six-square-block neighborhood
in Buffalo near his optometry practice.

His first project was a documentary series on Buffalo's black churches.
Living on his wife's schoolteacher salary, he traveled to Appalachia, Chile and Mexico
to take portraits of working people
— always using an old Rolleiflex, a bare bulb flash and occasionally a tripod.

Francesca Woodman        1958-1981

Francesca Woodman committed suicide at the age of 22, jumping from a window.
She had only about five years of photography behind her, much of it done as a student.
Working in black and white, she frequently took self-portraits
or depicted other young women, sometimes nude.
Often the figures are only partly visible or blurry, as if trying to escape the frame.

Library of Congress > Carol M. Highsmith Archive        USA        1980-2005

The online presentation of the Carol M. Highsmith Archive
features photographs of landmark buildings and architectural renovation projects
in Washington, D.C., and throughout the United States.

The first 23 groups of photographs contain more than 2,500 images
and date from 1980 to 2005, with many views in color as well as black-and-white.
Extensive coverage of the Library of Congress Jefferson Building was added in 2007.
The archive is expected to grow to more than
100,000 photographs covering all of the United States.

Highsmith, a distinguished and richly published American photographer,
has donated her work to the Library of Congress since 1992.
Starting in 2002, Highsmith provided scans with new donations
to allow rapid online access throughout the world.
Her generosity in dedicating the rights to the American people
for copyright free access also makes this Archive a very special visual resource.

New York's Photo League, 1936-1951

Sixty years ago this week,
the Photo League fell victim to Cold War witch hunts and blacklists,
closing its doors after 15 intense years of trailblazing
– and sometimes hell-raising – documentary photography.
From unabashedly leftist roots, the group influenced a generation of photographers
who transformed the documentary tradition, elevating it to heady aesthetic heights.
